La Cage Dorée is a French film from French-Portuguese director, Ruben Alves, inspired by his own family emigrant experience. After 30 years in Paris, the Ribeiro family gets the chance to return to Portugal, a fantasy that every emigrant family holds onto. But for the Ribeiro’s, moving back to Portugal is a destiny filled with comedy hijinx. A Date with Miss Fortune movie poster

Genre: Comedy, Romance | Duration: 1 hr 37 min

Portuguese Actors: Joaquim de Almeida, Nelly Furtado (Portuguese-Canadian), Jeannette Sousa (Portuguese-Canadian)

A Date with Miss Fortune is a romantic comedy that’ll really hit home if you were raised Portuguese and fell in love with someone outside of the culture. This movie makes a genuine effort to connect with Canada’s Portuguese community, featuring a Portuguese-Canadian actress in the lead role and filming on location in Toronto. Along with bringing in renowned Portuguese actor, Joaquim de Almeida, Portuguese-Canadian singer, Nelly Furtado, makes a cameo appearance. Watch the trailer!

Love Actually movie poster

Genre: Comedy, Romance, Drama | Duration: 2 hr 15 min

Portuguese Actors: Lúcia Moniz, Helder Costa, Carla Vasconcelos, Rodrigo Santoro (Brazilian - close enough!)

Love Actually is a rom-com classic that cleverly intertwines multiple love stories at Christmastime. Our favorite — and this should come as no surprise — involves a British man (played by Colin Firth) who travels to France to write a book and falls in love with a Portuguese housekeeper, Aurélia (played by the brilliant Lúcia Moniz). Together, they prove that language is no barrier to love. We also briefly meet Aurélia’s father and sister who bring comedy to this affair with their brutally honest retorts, the kind only the Portuguese can get away with! Get a sneak peek of their love story.

Note: Watch this one with friends as it is rated R. Not gonna lie, another favorite storyline includes a particularly steamy moment with Brazilian actor, Rodrigo Santoro…and deep frustration with Laura Linney’s character haha!
